Landry of Kaplan, has been selected to make his novitiate at Richelieu, Canada, preparatory to completing his major studies in the Congregation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculata in San Antonio, it was announced here. Dennis Simon Named Honorary Recruiter For the Kaplan Area The United States Army and Air Force recruiting office has recently appointed Dennis Simon of Kaplan as honorary recruiter to assist MSgt. Nugent, in charge of the Army and Air Force recruiting for this area, in aquainting the young men of the community with the opportunities and benefits offered for service in the oldest profession in the world. MSgt. Nugent requested that Mr.

Simon be appointed to assist him in his work because of the interest Mr. Simon has taken in promoting careers in the Army and Air Force to the young men of Kaplan. KAPLAN JAYCEES ELECTION 0 SET FOR JUNE 7 MEETING ACCIDENT Three Vermilion men who came in for a week end visit from Port Arthur, Texas, were seriously injured when the driver of the car they were riding in lost control and overturned near Abbeville on (the Abbeville-Kaplan highway Friday night. Wilfred Trahan, 20, driver of the car is in the Palms Hospital in Abbeville where his condition was reported to be very serious. He is suffering from head and internal injuries.

L. V. Schexnayder, 20, who was rushed to a hospital in New Orleans is stated to have both of his legs broken. He is also stated to te in a serious condition. Will Gaspard, 20, who was moved to a hospital in Lafayette is stated to have both of his legs broken and is also in a serious condition.

The three men who are employed by an oil refining company in Port Arthur, Texas, had come to Vermilion parish to visit their relatives near Kaplan. They were driving in a car owned by Leo Trahan of Port Arthur, Texas. The accident occured near the Abbe, ville golf course when the driver of the car failed to make a curve. The ear is stated to have overturned several times. PARISH OFFICERS ARE SWORN IN AT CEREMONIES 6 DIVIDENED IS DECLARED BY CREAMERY The board of Directors of the Vermilion Dairymen's Co-Operative Creamery of Abbeville who met a few days ago authorized the payment of a six perecent dividend, to the preferred stockholder, it was announced by Secretary A.

J. Thomas. The plant, one of the most modern in Louisiana, is processing 2000 gallons of milk a day and has equipment to handle as much as 4000 gallons a day, stated Mr. Thomas. More producers are being sought to provide milk for the creamy which has distributors in Abbeville, Rayne, New Iberia, Crowley, Eunice, Lafayette, Kaplan, Erath and Delcambre.

The local creamery has a plan for financing dairy operators who wish to produce milk for the creamery, stated Mr. Thomas who pointed out that anyone interested is invited to call on him or any of the officers of the creamery. AWARD BIDS TO REPAIR MERMENTAU RIVER BRIDGE AND FOR GRAVEL ROADS Baton Rouge The State department of highways Monday announced award of a contract for repairing the Mer-mentau river bridge on State Roub. 2 The contract went to T. L.

James and Co. for $138,364. A contract for aggregate surfacing 13 miles of Route 104 betwen Harckberry and Carlyss in Cameron and Calcasieu parishes was awarded to Pierson Construction Co. for $103,171. 71 GRADUATES MAPLAN ARE GIVEN DIPLOMAS Robert and Mary Dorcheus, married seniors who graduated from Northwestern State College Monday morning, use the old handgrip on the diploma in deciding a place in the Commencement line.

Bob met Mary when he came from St. Ignatius, Montana, to the Navy V-5 program at the college. In 1946 they were married and Mary joined Bob on the Honor Roll. They go now to Gueydan in. Vermilion parish where Bob, a stellar athlete, will coach and Mary will teach.

Further developments in plans for the fourteenth of July celebration in Kaplan were discussed at a special meeting of the Junior Chamber of Commerce Tuesday night at the Kaplan High School. Some entertainment is now being planned for the Saturday and Sunday before the 14th such as bingo and the rodeo is planned for the Sunday afternoon before the 14th and a repeat performance on the afternoon of the celebration day. In this many persons from out of town who would like to take part in some of the celebration and would particularly like to see the rodeo but could not be in Kaplan on Wednesday for the big celebration could come on the Sunday before. Especially many rodeo fans who would be unable to attend the rodeo on the 14th could travef many miles to see it on the Sunday. perforance without missing any work.

Plans for a barbecue for the members of the Jaycees in the near, future were also discussed but it was decided that the barbecue be shelved and instead have a banquet for the instalaltion of the officers for the coming year. VERMILION PARISH NURSE TO VISIT GUEYDAN HIGH SCHOOL JUNE 7 Mrs. Brignac, Vermilion Parish Nurse, will te at the Gueydan High School on Monday, June 7, from 9 a. m. to 3 p. m.

to immunize all children who will begin school this coming September, it was announced. All Mothers of children who will enter school in September are to bring their children to the high school to be vaccinated on that date, the announcement stated. GUEYDAN FHA HOLD ANNUAL EVALUTION PROGRAM MEETING The Gueydan Future Homemakers of the Gueydan High School presented an Evalution Program May 20, 1948 in the High School auditorium. Twenty-six girls participated on the program, each giving some phase of accomplishments in local club work, homemaking class, and home experience. The newly elected officers were initiated.

Honorary member was taken in the organization. The mother rating this honor was Mrs. J. R. Sewell.

Mrs. Dennis Hartwell, the newly elected president of FHA club, told of the clubs accomplishments for the past year. Guests at this meeting- were: state advisor, Miss Lela A. Tomlinson; district advisor, Miss Helen Nicholas, and students from her methods class at S. L.

I. Mrs. Tomlinson presented awards to the following: Jeanne Sewell, FHA pin with key, scroll and torch; Lelya Mae Woods, gold FHA bracelet. Miss Nicholas awarded sterling silver thimbles to the following girls for outstanding work: Theresa Simoneaux, and Mary Milliamn. Mr.

Bush presented degrees of achievement for Junior and Chapter Homemakers. After giving club yell and club song, the meeting was adjourned and each was served a bottle of pop. KAPLAN SEAMAN SERVING IN CHINA AREA Wilfred LeBoeuf, seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert LeBoeuf of Route.

1, Kaplan, is serving1 aboard the seaplane tender USS Duxbury Bay. The Duxbury Bay is presently engaged in servicing Navy planes in the Tsington, China area. The young theological student spent I five years in St. Anthony's College at San Antonio, Texas, the order's minor seminary He will take his vows on May 31, 1949, upon the compeltion of his studies. He received his habit on Tuesday, May 26, 1948.

Enroute from San Antonio, Texas, to Canada, Landry stopped in Kaplan Friday to visit his parents and his brothers and sisters there. The Landry family had a family reunion to welcome the novitiate. BOND ISSUE FOR $1,200,000 IS SOLD AT2.70 The Vermilion parish School Board, at a special meeting in the School Board office in the court house in Abbeville Tuesday, accepted a bid from a syndicate headed by White, Hattier Sanford of New Orleans for of consolidated! publicschools bonds at an average rate of interest of 2.70749 percent. Another bid was submitted by a synidacte by A. M.

Smithwood Co. Inc. of New Orleans at an average rate of interest of 2.79 per cent. The bond issue was voted by the property owners of Vermilion parish on April 8 of this year for the purpose of improving the Vermilion parish schools, the liquidation, tha Jndebtednes of the various school districts and for the consolidation of all the parish schools into one district. VERMILION STUDENTS HONORED AT SOUTHWESTERN LOUISIANA INSTITUTE Southwestern students who distinguished themselves as campus leaders or by achieving scholastic excellence were cited at a special honors convocation in the Men's gymnasium at S.

L. I. Wednesday morning. Those honored included members of the four classes of the institute who made a scholastic average of 2. 5 or better during the first semester of the 1947-48 year; students selected for listing in "Who's Who" Among students in American Colleges and and members and, pledges of Southwestern honor societies.

Among those from Vermilion parish who were honored were Joe Touchet of Abbeville who became a member and Hartwell Lewis, also of Abbeville, who was pledged into the Blue Key Honor Fraternity. Joseph Ezel Bertrand of Kaplan was honored for having attained.a 2.5 average or beter during his senior year. Sophomore students from Vermilion parish who were also honored are Nar-cisse Broussard of Kaplan, John Erasse Hebert cf Maurice and Joseh Charles Moss of Abbeville. Vermilion parish freshmen also honored were Jerome C. Gordy of Abbeville, Margaret Frances Hebert of Meaux and Evelyn Mae Robideaux of Kaplan.

Evelyn Trahan of Abbeville was a-niong those presented as a member of the Vermilion honor society. Vermilion students pledged into Lambde Omega, honor society for first and second year women students, were Dorothy Hardy of Kaplan, Frances Hebert of Meaux, Agnes Sagrera of Theall, Eloise Sobert of Abbeville, Elise Jo Stutes of Erath and Evelyn Mae Robideaux of Kaplan. ISSUE PERMIT TO DRILL WELL IN GUEYDAN AREA The state department of conservation announced the awarding of a permit to the Pure Oil Company for the drilling of a well designated as the No. 17 Alliance Trust Company in the Gueydan oil field. The well will be drilled to a depth of 10,500 feet.

SECOND WELL SPOTTED Humble has a second well spotted to be drilled from the platform south of Grand Isle when the rig from State No. 1, is available. It has also constructed platforms in the Gulf for a well 5.5 miles off Caminada Pass and for its No. 1 Tiger Pass 15 miles south of Pecan Island. Both wells are still waiting on Tig.

Mary Magdalene Catholic church in Abbeville at 9 a. m. Monday for William Istre, 66, of Abbeville who committed suicide at 8 a. m. Sunday at the residence of his son, Whitney 6 miles 0 south of Erath in the 2nd ward of Vermilion parish.

Mr. Istre died immediately after shooting himself in the mouth with a 12-gauge shotgun. He left no suicide note, but is believed by members of the family to have committed suicide because of ill health. He is survived by four sons, Adras of Kaplan, Emede of Port Arthur, Whitney J. of Erath and Antoine who is in the U.
