Robert Triggs Dies Suddenly While at Work News has been received that Robert Triggs died suddenly while sitting at his desk and talking over the telephone at his work at Detroit, Mich, on July 25th. Robert wili be remembered by many here as one of the early settlers at Florence where he built a home and lived a number of years.

His mother Mrs WF Triggs is living at Grand Rapids, Mich, and one brother Morris Triggs is living at Hartford, Conn. Here in a nuisheli. is what is what the new tax bill as it passed the House Monday would mean to you. Some changes might be made later in the Senate. Generally speaking, if you filed no income tax return last year, you need pay no tax this year unless you've had a raise or your tax status has otherwise changed.

If you pay any income tax at all a surtax of at least five per cent will be imposed on your whole taxable income (without any de duction for earned income). The surtax ranges from 5 up to 75 on income over $5 000.000. This is in addition to the regular in come tax, which remains 4 and a "super tax" amounting to 10 of your whole tax bill. Your personal credit and allowance for dependents is unchanged. If your wile has a separate income, she may continue to file a separate return.

If you own an automobile, air plane or yacht you must pay a flat $5 tax on it slightly more if the yacht is over 28 feet. If you buy a new car the tax will be 7 twice what it is now. Excise taxes also will be increased on many other commodities, such as liquor, and a 10 sales tax will be levied on furs, jewelry and toilet preparations. If you inherit more than l(the present exemption being retained) the tax will start at three instead of two per cent and increased sliarply up. On the exact anniversary of the rains that caused the flood of 1940-Aug 4- Gueydan citizens who suffered greatly during that disaster seemed doomed Jonday morning to experience repeat performance when a total ot 5,83 inches of rain fell in less than two hours. The rain started falling about 7:30 and continued until about 9:30. this hour a drizzle was still falling and it wa believed the total precipitation had reached some 6 inches. Streets were flooded for several-hours. Citizens re getting jittery.

They felt better when it was learned it bad not rained north of town any distance and seven miles east was yet dry and dusty. The rain was west and south. Everyone is praying earnestly that no repeat of last year's disaster is in store for them this year in spite of the same beginning on the same date as that of last year. The following is contents of a telegram we received from Congressman James Domengeaux: "It is a pleasure to inform you that the Hnusf has today agreed to Senate amendment on the General Fiood Control Bill which includes theTeche Vermilion and Mermentau Projects. Although these projects were too late for inclusion in this Bill on its original introduction in the House through the recommendation and efforts of Senator Overton Congressman Vance Plauche and myself they were added in as Amendments while this bill was in Senate Committee.

The Bill will now go to the President for his signature and final approval." Mrs. Ramsey Returns Shirley Takes Up Nursing The many friends of Mr M. I. Ramsey will be glad to learn that she has returned from Houston, Texas after having been under treatment of a specialist there tor more than fonr months. 'She has improved in heaith considerably.

Shirley, the baby daughter after completing high school at St Anthony's at Beaumont has entered St Joseph's at Houston for a three years' course in nursing, she hopes to then take up a course of technician. Fobs Oil Co. have brought in their Grady Humble No. 1 in the the swamp, off from production in the Gueydan Oil Field about a half a mile. The well is reported making 600 barrels fro a 316th inch choke.

Completion of this well for production and a northern extension will most likely result in many new locations right off. and bring into play other lands in that area. The Dore well trying for an easterly extension for the field is now drilling at an interesting Jeptb, and it is hope and genuine expectancy that it will result in a commercial producer for another extension of the field, and cause other locations to be made drilled. Reports from the wild gas well at Hayes is that it continnes to rage in its wildness spreading muck all over a wide area around the well. Instructions aaye been givea by the Conservation De partment to set the well afire again.

So far when relighted it continues to blow out the fire. It constitutes a terrible nuisance and hazard to a wide circle around the well. Congressman Plauche Says Separate Returns Are Winning Congressman Vance Plauche writes from Washington "we are now considering the new tax bill which was explained by me. in over the radio last week The Louisiana delegation claims to have won quite a victory when the original rule which was to govern the consideration of this bill was withdrawn and a new rule granted, permitting the consideration of an amendment which would provide for separate returns by hasband and wife. "As is generally known, community property rights and estates has recognized by Louisiana law since admission to the Union.

This law has been copied by many states and when we presented our case, we received sufficient support to assure the defeat of the rule. "If we are successful in getting the law amended it will save the residents of Louisianas many hundred of thousands of dollars." L. P. GUIDRY'S ood Stop Miss Margaret Ann Bonin. daughter of Leo Bonin of Gueydan, is oni; of the pperclassmen who are to assits in the Freshman Orientation program at Southwestern Louisiana Institute in Septpmber "Big selected because of a sch las' ically successful Freshman year, combined with good adjustment traits, are to arrive on the campus September 8 one day prior to the coming ol the Freshman.

After a meeting with Miss Agnes Iviwards, Dean of Women, thev will be on hand to greet freshmen women at the moment of their arrival Before the close of the spring semester these young women were given a training course in this work by the Dean of Women. Organization the plan calls for assignment of each of the girls tooneof the dormitories, to town or to commuters in order that they might be of service to the Freshmen women failing in these categories Each of the upper-classmen selected has bee giveo the names of fojr Freshman students, to whom they were to this summer. Miss has been assigned to Freshmen in Buchanan Hall. Miss Jessie Meaux and Miss Lucille Clostio of Kaplan are among the upperclassmen who are to assist in the Freshman Orientation Program at SLI tLis September. Miss Meaux, daughter of Mrs 1eaux has been assigned to Freshmen students in Senior Hall.

Miss Clostio daughter of Uly-sse Clostio has been assigned to commuters. "I'll Pot Yon in KP" "And I'm going to put you on KP duty for seven days." When Private Bill Jones writes home that he is going to be peeling spuds or washing dishes down at the mess hall for the next week because he was late for that formation or didn't quite get back to camp on time the night before, it means that he has just heard his commanding officer, in words similar to those above, ad minister the simplest form of military justice. This was not an arbitarv action taken by the commander according to his particular whim at the moment, but ao action which is very defined as to scope, severity and application by the War Department, is to be found in the 104tb Article of War. In the military judicial system justice is meted out by three types of courts, the General, Special and Summary Courts-Martial, the jurisdiction of each depending upon the seriuusnes of the the offense together with other factors. But, for those minor offenses, which do not involve moral turpitude, flagrant violations of regulations of regulations, or major irregularities the power to impose disciplinary punishment upon members of the command, without the intervention of acourt-martialis given to every unit commander.

But it should be clearly understood that the accused, if he deems his punishment unjustmay demand and is entitled to a trial by court-martial. The punishments author GUEYDAN, LA. Saturday Monday. Aug. 9-11 Groceries, Meats, Vegetables, Fruits, Gardes Seeds ized under the 104th Article of War are the following, and those only; admonition, reprimand, withholding of certain privileges extra fatigue duty, restriction to certain specified limits, and hard labor without confinement.

None of these may exceed one week in duration. There can never be included in the sentence any forfeiture of pay nor anyj confinement under armed guard. It is well to remember also that this authority of the commanding officer to punish connot be delegated to another, and that the action taken by the officer must be done in person. He was selected at the beginning for the position he occupies because he showed qualities of leadership and an understanding of men, He may at times make use of admonition and reprimand, not as a penalty entirely, but as corrective measure, more analogous to instruction than to punishment. His duty to create and maintain efficiency is always held paramount.

Any punishment detrimental to health or which tends to degrade the rank or person of the offender is prohibited. It is probably reassuring to the soldier, as well as to the folks back home, to find that no record is made in the soldier's history of punishments such as those described above and that after the extra duty imposed is served, it is never afterwards held against him. It might be safe to say that many a man in the army today, after having expeienced some extra duty under this Article of War for minor irregularities or infractions of rules, has been deeply impressed and has then gone foward to become an excellent soldier without ensuing reflection against bis character as a soldier.
