members month at last Centen- 6 are al of edition? p.m. Leleune. For Thursday, March 11, 1999 The Gueydan Journal Public Forum Arbor Day donations Dear Editor: We wish to thank Wal-Mart for for a donation of $400 that the company gave to Jesse Owens Elementary School to beautify the property. Colorful shrubbery will be placed at school windows, and entrances. This will greatly help the looks of the town of Gueydan, especially for the Clear City Contest 1 by the Garden Cho federation, of which the Gueydan Garden Club and Town of Guey dan sponsors, locally.

We especially thank the parish for donations of mulch, Pep Lopez who donated reinforcement rods and his time and effort in cutting and bending the rods to keep flower bed edgings i in place, and to Steve LeJeune for his construction of flower boxes for town business places to beautify the streets. Thanks to club members Diana Hebert for her many hours of working pulling weeds and cleaning flower beds in the town, and to Rowena Hardee, Dot dePerrodil and Earline Cormier for their long hours of volunteer service. Gueydan Garden Club Civic Committee Confused Dear Editor: I continue to be confused by folk with apparent proper formation of character who, nontheless, espouse views that are an aberration. I refer to the views of the young man in the front page story of the March 4th issue. To say that Mary Landrieu is a blessing to Louisiana is to offend God and anyone with a Christian conviction.

Mary Landrieu happens to support some of the greatest evils imaginable, two of which are abortion and Clinton. Sincerely, J. Boatner Hebert Drainage District letter to citizens Ladies and Gentlemen: Pursuant to the provisions of resolution adopted by the members of Sub-District No. 5 of the Drainage District, a special election will be held Saturday, May 1, 1999, in order to obtain approval of a ten (10) year (eleven) 11 Mill property tax for construction, improving, maintaining and operating drainage works in the District. This tax is intended to be an extension of a 5.32 mill maintenance tax which was adopted in 1989 and which will expire in 1999.

this tax proposition is also intended to replace a 3.33 mill property tax which was a bond issue adopted in 1989. This bond issue was utilized by the Drainage District for its aquatic spraying program, i.e. to spray water hyacinths and lilies and other aquatic growth in the drainage canals throughout the district. These two millages total 8.65 mills in property tax. The small additional millage which we are proposing for the May 1, 1999 election will enable the drainage district to purchase a second excavator in order that we may have two excavators operating throughout the district at all times or at least one operating at all times if the other is being repaired.

As many of you know, the dragline maintained by the district is old and would soon need to be replaced; however, after investigating further, it appears that we will be able to do all the work throughout the district with two commercial excavators. The purpose of this letter is to simply advise you of our reason for proposing the May 1, 1999 election and to inform you that a major portion of the tax which would be adopted in May is really an extension of the two 1989 taxes which will be expiring. We believe that everyone in the district can appreciate the importance of maintaining our drainage system thoughout the district and we trust that you will support our efforts to accomplish this purpose. The Board Members are also available to ask any questions which you may have concerning the election. Thank you for your continued support of our ongoing efforts throughout the district.

We are, Yours very truly, Gueydan Drainage District Patrick V. Hair Leon P. Broussard Adrian D. LeJeune Clyde P. Reese Jr.
