Burial was in the Gueydan Cemetery. Mr. Benoit died Monday, October 18, at his residence in Lafayette. A native of New Iberia, he was a resident of Lafayette at the time of his death. He was a stock man for Target.

Survivors include his parents, Arthur J. and Bobbie Benoit of Gueydan; two brothers, Durke Benoit of Gueydan and Kevin Benoit of Brookesvillc, Florida; three sisters, Mrs. Daniel (Cynthia) Abshire and Mrs. David (Angclia) Richard of Gueydan and Mrs. Wayne (Lesia) LeBlanc of Esther-wood; and 12 nieces and nephews.

Matthews Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Jeremy Abshire Jeremy Abshire, 31, died Saturday, October 23, at 10:50 p.m. in Cameron. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 26, at 2 p.m. at SL Peter Catholic Church in Gueydan, with burial in the Gueydan Cemetery.

A native of Gueydan, Mr. Abshire was a resident of Holly Beach at the time of his death. He was a commercial fisherman. Survivors include his mother, Rosa Abshire of Holly Beach; his father, Leo Abshire, Sr. of Gueydan; his step mother, Ada Abshire of Cameron; a daughter of Lafayette; three brothers, Leo Abshire and Kevin Abshire, both of Holly Beach, Brian Keith Abshire, Sr.

of Carlyss and four sisters, Patricia Ann Abshire of Carlyss, Mrs. Russell (Ramona) Heasty of Mctairie, and Mrs. Kenneth (Roxanne) Kellum and Mrs. Michael (Anita) Fredrick, both of Holly Beach. Matthews Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

As an adult, though, he has seen three of his works become movies. And now his latest novel is set to be filmed by Walt Disney Television. The final contracts for the film rights to "A Lesson Before Dying" have been completed, although a filming date has not yet been set. The novel was released this spring. "A Lesson Before Dying" also recently received the 1993 Southern Book Award for fiction from the Southern Festival of Books. Two of his previous novels were filmed for television, including "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pitt- Child abuse prevention programs will soon be presented in all Vermilion Parish public schools. More than 60 teachers and school administrators and several community resource personnel attended the first of a two-day workshop on child abuse prevention Friday.

The workshop was sponsored by the Vermilion Parish School Board. Department of Special Education. The workshop is designed to educate school personnel in preparation of presenting child abuse prevention programs in their respective schools. Emilia Bcllonc. MSW, BCSW, a social worker in private practice in Lafayette, presented the workshop.

Bcllonc has extensive experience in the field of child abuse and has presented numerous workshops on the national level as well as locally. "What I want to do is give you a basic overview of what child abuse is, practical realistic, and relevant to real situations people are in." Bcllone said there three criteria to follow to diagnose child abuse: the victim's age is under 18; there is a power imbalance between the perpetrator and the victim; and there NIGHT, From Pg. 1 until they return home. Parents should then examine the goodies before allowing the children to eat them. If packages are damaged or the seals broken, the food should be discarded.

On Hallow'een night, home owners should also be prepared and concerned about vandals. The homes should be lighted as much as possible outdoors. Automobiles should be parked in garages, carports, or as close to the homes as possible, with doors locked and keys removed. Garbage cans, outdoor furniture, and lawn accessories should be put away so that vandals cannot wreak havoc to homes and property. Don't give the culprits the invitation to commit vandalism.

Teach children that Hallow'een is the advent of All Saints Day, and All Souls Day, and that prayers should be offered in preparation for our own deaths to save our souls. Don't give them the idea that evil is to be glorified, and made light of. On October 14, officers investigated criminal damage to property, when a complaint reported to police that his windshield on his vehicle was damaged. The victim advised police that while passing on the 400 block of N. LcMaire St. a suspect threw rocks hitting his vehicle chipping the windshield. Charges are forthcoming against the suspect.

On October 15, Russell J. Touchet, 29, of 504 E. Mill St, Kaplan, was arrested by Wildlife and Fishery officers and charged with two counts of resisting an officer, flight from an officer and reckless operation. On October 16, Kenneth D. Rudd, 1 8, of 1800 W.
